ICAN Stoke on Trent

About Us

The Early Years Speech & Language Service at Stoke-on-Trent opened in January 2003 to provide integrated education and speech and language therapy to children within the Foundation Stage who have a severe speech and/or language disability.

The centre is one of a national network developed by ICAN. Locally our centre was developed in Partnership with City of Stoke-on-Trent LEA and Newcastle-under-Lyme Primary Care Trust.

ICAN is a charity that helps children with speech language disabilities across the UK, by providing training and support to Practitioners and Speech and Language Therapists.

In 2005 the Stoke-on-Trent centre achieved ICAN Accreditation. This awarded to settings that have successfully met the criteria set by ICAN, making it a Centre of Excellence. The Stoke-on-Trent ICAN service is one of 18 services within the UK to have achieved Accreditation status.

DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know that one in ten children in the U.K (approximately one million) have a speech or language difficulty?

In Stoke on Trent the figure is much higher than this - evidence from Sure Start local programmes suggests that more than half of the children in Stoke on Trent are at risk of a language or speech delay. This will impact significantly on the child's ability to learn and on future opportunities in life.
