She works part-time in a local supermarket – hours 9.30 – 2.30, Monday to Friday. She works on the till, which she enjoys as it involves talking to customers. However, she would like a more interesting job. She left school with no qualifications, but is now doing English and Maths GCSE’s at college, two evenings a week. She wishes she had worked harder at school. She would like her children to do well, but worries that they do not take things seriously, particularly Zac, who is always complaining about his teacher and seems to be getting into trouble at school.
Claire used to hear them read each evening, but nowadays Zac always seems to have ‘forgotten’ to bring his reading book home. Jasmine will read, but reluctantly, and quickly, as she is usually watching something on television.
She is concerned regarding Jasmine’s friendship with Zoe. Zoe has an older sister who seems to influence them. Zoe wears very short skirts, and is always wearing make-up. Jasmine often comes home from Zoe’s house plastered in make-up.
Claire is pleased that Adam likes cooking, and lets him get on with it at times. He is especially good at making curries. However, she gets very irritated when he has been in the kitchen. Every saucepan in the house seems to have been used, and he NEVER washes anything up! This is a bone of contention. He seems to think that if he has cooked, he does not need to do anything else. He doesn’t see that she always cooks and cleans up afterwards.
He only cooks when he wants to, if he doesn’t feel like it, he doesn’t. This is extremely irritating as sometimes she is very tired when she arrives home from work and would like him to cook, but he doesn’t if he is not in the mood. He seems to think that as she only works part-time she is never tired.
She feels guilty that she does not spend enough time with the children. She took Zac and Jasmine to the library regularly when they were younger, but they are not as interested in going now, and she never seems to have time to take Josh.
She used to read bedtime stories, but feels they are too old now. Means to read one to Josh, but often is just glad to get him up the stairs and into bed.
