Module 1 - 1 day course - 2 credits

Using Information Carrying Words for Assessing and Working with Language Delay

Dates available:

This session is suitable for practitioners who work with children aged 1 to 7 years. It will cover a package of assessment and strategies for use with children who present with delayed language based on information carrying words. By the end of the session practitioners will have:

  • A good understanding of information carrying words
  • An overview of normal language development
  • Be able to use a simple language screening tool
  • Be able to devise activities related to a child's language level
  • Have information about when to refer a child on

Module 3 - 1 day course - 2 credits

Language Development in a Multi-cultural Society

Dates available:

3rd March 2011

This covers -

  • Language development
  • Second language learning
  • Considerations when children are learning English as a second language
  • Practical strategies to engage with children and families for whom English is an additional language
  • The effect of culture on attachment and communication

Module 4 - 1 day course - 2 credits

Supporting Bonding and Attachment in the Ante-Natal and Early Post-Natal Period

This module discusses -

  • How bonding and attachment develops in the ante-natal and early post-natal periods
  • The impact of intra and extra uterine environment on the development of attachment and bonding is debated as well as how foetal brain development occurs
  • What shapes bonding (group work)
  • Exploring the hormonal physiology of bonding and attachment
  • Initiating touch and contact on the neo-natal intensive care unit

Module 5 - 1 day course - 2 credits

Using Cued Articulation to Support Speech and Literacy Development

Morning session -

  • This module will cover 'cued articulation' which is a recognised cueing and teaching tool designed to support speech development. It is especially useful in helping those who find it difficult to receive, recognise, pronounce, remember or sequence the sounds of spoken English

Afternoon session -

  • This module leads on from the morning session and looks at a method of colour coded cues to back up cued articulation to help develop literacy skills. It is particularly suitable for Teachers, Learning Support staff, Speech & Language Therapy Assistants and those working with children with speech impairments aiming to develop literacy skills

Module 6 - 1 day course - 2 credits

Developing Communication Skills Through the Senses

This session is suitable for practitioners who work with children aged 0 to 7 years. This is a full day course and will cover:

  • Sensory integration theory
  • Practical activities to develop communication skills using the senses
  • Research activities to promote communication
  • Devising activities related to a child's developmental level

Module 7 - 1 day course - 2 credits

One Step At A Time

'One Step At A Time' by Ann Locke is a structured programme for the systematic teaching of spoken language in nurseries and primary schools.

It identifies the essential spoken language skills crucial for every child's educational development.

The course will highlight the pre-requisites for developing language and will cover the first two years of the programme.

Developing Communication Skills Through Music

This course looks at the theory of musicality in children aged 0 - 7 years.

A major part of the day is devoted to the practical application of developing children's communication skills through the medium of music.

Module 10 - 1 day course - 2 credits

Communication Through Play 4 to 7 years

This course looks at the theory of play in children aged 4 - 7 years.

A major part of the day is devoted to the practical application of developing children's communication skills through the medium of play.

Module 12 - 1 day course - 2 credits

Creating an inclusive environment for children with social communication difficulties (ASD) in the early years

Please note: This module requires you to bring photographs of children at key times of the day to make a visual timetable.

 

This session is suitable for practitioners who work with children aged 0 to 7 years. This is a full day course and includes opportunities to develop practical activities to support the learning environment. This covers

  • An understanding of social communication difficulties with a particular focus on children with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder
  • How to create an appropriate learning / language environment
  • Behaviour strategies
  • Visual strategies to support social and communication skills
  • Structured play interventions
  • Developing a multi sensory approach
  • Target setting and IEP writing

Module 13 - 2 day course- 4 credits

Child Development

Dates available:

 1st March 2011 and

14th March 2011

This is a 2 day course written by a multi agency team. It covers milestones of child development and explores how brain development links to experience and parenting. It makes strong links to the Early Years Foundation Stage and has many activities to enhance observation and assessment of children.

Module 14 - 1 day course - 2 credits

Speech Anxiety: Helping Children Overcome Selective Mutism and Reluctance to Speak

This is a one day course which aims to equip candidates with a better understanding of speech anxiety and how it manifests itself; how to identify the child with speech anxiety difficulties; and what strategies and interventions might be used to help the child become a more confident speaker.

Module 15 - 1 day course

Supporting Children with Speech

Disorder Using Letters and Sounds 

21st March 2011

 

This course looks at normal speech development and the difference between speech sound delay and disorder. It will present a simplified version of the Psycholinguistic model and how this relates to speech disorders. Finally it will provide practical advice of how to adapt the activities in letters and sounds to better support children with speech difficulties.

Module 16 - 1 day course - 2 credits

Sensory Story

This course looks at the role the senses play in learning and how the senses contribute to the attachment and development of children. It also gives practitioners demonstrations on sensory stories, the reasoning behind them and ideas on how to devise and develop sensory stories.
