Dummies and cot death
- Recent research suggests use of dummies in the first 12 months may reduce the risk of cot death (S.I.D.S)
(Li, Willinger et al BMJ, 2005). - They compared figures of 185 children who had died of SIDS between 1997 and 2000.
- A significant number of those who died had not had a dummy on the night they died.
Other research
Hauck et al (2005) studied the Medline database between 1966 and 2004 and summarised:
- Potential detrimental effects suggest dummy use should be of limited duration.
- They supported dummy use up to 1 year of age.
- Dummies should not be used as a substitute for nursing or feeding.
- Cease using dummies by 12 months as risk of otitis media increases.
- It should not be coated in sweet substances.
