Nursery Albums

A Nursery produced a montage of pictures for their children. The montage included:

  • Pictures of what is important to the child in the Nursery setting
  • Pictures of what is important to the child at home
  • Pictures of the parent/carer with the child

These pictures were then discussed with child and at a ceremony were given to the child to take home.

These activities encourage parent/carer-child bonding and communication by:

  • Sharing experiences, and
  • Providing talking points

Crèche Design

A Crèche considered the design of their facilities and how they could best be improved to stimulate babies.

  • Put up to date pictures of parents and carers on the walls
  • Child friendly pictures to identify boy's or girl's toilets
  • Use a designated quiet area for stories – tell stories at a set time, use appropriate stories for children and develop story sacks for children to use at the Crèche and at home.
  • Use a number of different mobiles that can be regularly changed in stimulating, contrasting colours.
  • For the immobile equipment have a black and white safety floor, use a reflective acrylic mirror and use black and white blankets in the sleeping cots.

These practices will provide stimulation for babies and young children to help develop neural pathways which will, in turn, provide a firm foundation for the development of language by making the child receptive to various stimuli.

DID YOU KNOW?

If a baby saw only horizontal lines for the first two years, he/she would not have the ability to see vertical lines in later life.
